Early Childhood Screening

The Early Childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth.

Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how children are doing between the ages of 3 to 4 years.  Early Childhood Screening can identify possible learning or health concerns at an early age so children can get the help they need before starting school.

Early Childhood Screening or evidence of a comparable screening by a non-school provider (e.g., Head Start, Child & Teen Checkups/EPSDT or a health care provider) is required for entrance in Minnesota's public schools or within 30 days of enrollment into kindergarten. Preschoolers need screening within 90 days of enrollment. Additionally, screening needs to be completed to meet eligibility to receive state scholarships.

School Readiness

School readiness is a public school program open to Minnesota children age 3 years to kindergarten enrollment. School Readiness programming emphasizes activities in all areas of growth and learning.  Our goal is to prepare children for success in school and life, and we believe it is more important than ever to educate the whole-child.  Research shows that a whole-child approach to education, one where children have opportunities to develop math and literacy skills, but also, social-emotional, physical and cognitive skills is developmentally appropriate and better prepares children for life well beyond their time in a classroom.

Freshwater provides School Readiness Programming in the following districts:

Early Childhood Family Education

Early childhood family Education is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten entrance.  The program is offered through Minnesota public school districts.  ECFE is based on the idea that the family provides a child’s first and most significant learning environment and parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.  ECFE classes are staffed by licensed parent educators and early childhood teachers.  An advisory board, consisting mostly of parents, meets quarterly to guide the development of ECFE programs.
